Sensory Overload Modes Hub
Pick the right ruleset for learning, competing, or recovering.
Sensory Overload modes change the psychological contract of the same tunnel fantasy. Normal teaches. Ranked examines. Zen rehabilitates. Practice isolates hard segments with checkpoints. Choosing poorly — for example opening Ranked on a queasy stomach — creates false conclusions about your skill.
Use this hub to route into:
Mechanical fundamentals still live in How to Play and Mechanics Deep Dive. Level gimmicks live under Levels.
Quick comparison
| Mode | Best for | Avoid when |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Learning layers in order | You only chase clips |
| Ranked | Endurance and leaderboards | You skip warm-ups |
| Zen | Full-route rehearsal without score ego | You need competitive stakes tonight |
| Practice | Checkpoint drills on one hard bar | You never validate full routes afterward |
Recommended weekly mix
- 35% Normal skill building
- 25% Practice segment drills
- 20% Ranked attempts
- 10% Zen recovery
- 10% focused level pages
Adjust toward Zen and Accessibility if Motion Sickness Tips symptoms rise. Adjust toward Ranked only after Vertigo micro-moves feel boring.
Modes and the demo
The demo exposes the fantasy early and includes leaderboard hooks that pull players toward Ranked emotions quickly. Resist that pull until Demo Walkthrough basics are done. Launch on August 20, 2026 will amplify mode identity further — track notes on Patch Notes.
Modes are coaches with different personalities. Fire the coach that yells when you needed a tutor.
Mode picker questions
Ask: Do I need a teacher, an examiner, a microscope, or a physical therapist today? Normal teaches. Ranked examines. Practice isolates. Zen rehabituates. If you answer “I need content,” you are picking with hunger rather than strategy. Hunger is how motion-sickness diaries get written.
Practice-first evenings
When a single gate owns your death log, open Practice Mode before Normal marathons. Ten focused checkpoint attempts plus one full-route validation beats forty tilted restarts. After Practice, decide intentionally between Normal validation and Ranked examination.
Accessibility across modes
Modes do not replace Accessibility Settings. Speed-line removal and outline thickness travel with you from Zen to Ranked. Change presets between modes only when you are running a deliberate A/B test, not mid-tilt.
Mechanics literacy reminder
If Ranked feels random, re-read Mechanics Deep Dive and relabel deaths before switching modes again. Mode hopping cannot fix a broken death taxonomy.
Weekly mode review
Once per week, write four numbers: Normal minutes, Practice minutes, Ranked attempts, Zen minutes. If Ranked dominates while Practice is empty, you are taking exams without drills. If Practice dominates without Normal validation, you are living in the microscope. Rebalance using this hub’s mix targets and stop rules from the Comfort Checklist.
Modes exist so the same tunnel can teach, test, isolate, and heal. Pick on purpose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for demo and launch questions.
Which mode should beginners use?
Normal first. Add Zen if pressure or nausea interferes. Ranked comes later.
Is Zen “easy mode”?
Visually it can still overwhelm. It mainly removes score pressure so you can rehearse reads.
Do modes share the same controls?
Yes. See the Controls tool page — modes change rules and pacing, not the input grammar.
